As part of a growing Design and Production team, this role sits at the heart of a major uplift in design standards and visual communication practices. You’ll lead a team of four designers in creating clear, accessible and functional design systems that ensure consistency across thousands of public-facing and operational materials — from community campaigns to critical documents.
In this role you’ll shape the organisation’s visual identity, establish design standards, and help steer future brand refresh initiatives. You’ll also play a hands-on role in both print and digital design, guiding the team through conceptual development, design execution and continuous improvement using human-centred and Double Diamond frameworks.
This role suits a strategic, conceptual designer with strong leadership capability — someone confident creating order from ambiguity, mentoring junior designers, and driving design excellence in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
What you’ll bring:
- Senior-level design experience across brand, visual communication or wayfinding systems.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain design standards and visual identity systems.
- Confident leadership of small teams, with mentoring and coaching experience.
- Strong conceptual and executional skills across both print and digital media.
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop (PC-based, transitioning to Mac).
- Experience applying human-centred design and double diamond methodologies.
- A collaborative, adaptable and non-precious approach to getting things done.
- Opportunity to shape the design identity of a respected public institution.
- Flexible hybrid work arrangements (approx. two days on-site Port Melbourne).
- Excellent learning and development opportunities.
- A supportive, purpose-driven culture that combines government stability with the pace of a creative studio.
Your application must include:
- Well crafted and designed CV combined with a Folio of branding and visual communications design (one PDF).
Please note:
Only those who can demonstrate the above experience will be responded to.
You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident in order to apply.
